Teaser Tuesday 2013-11-12: Our Hundred Days In Europe

Teaser Tuesdays

This week, my Teaser is from an old book, long out of print in its hardcover edition, but with several good paperback and e-book editions. (The many hardcover editions, of course, are still available in libraries.)

The process of shaving, never a delightful one, is a very unpleasant and awkward piece of business when the floor on which one stands, the glass in which he looks, and he himself are all describing those complex curves which make cycles and epicycles seem like simplicity itself. The little box contained a reaping machine…. It was, in short, a lawnmower for the masculine growth of which the proprietor wishes to rid his countenance.

Book: Our Hundred Days In Europe (1887)

Author: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

I’ve just added this to my Goodreads To Be Read shelf and to my Mount TBR 2014 Challenge list. It sat on my bookshelf for years, through at least three moves, but I’ve never read it. Not sure why, since I’ve admired Holmes’ way with words since I first read The Autocrat at the Breakfast Table and his poem Old Ironsides.

Sunday Scribblings 2013-11-10

Sunday Scribblings

This week’s prompt: Poem

Cori Winrock lives here in Rochester, NY, and teaches at SUNY Geneseo where she serves on the pre-medicine advisory committee and encourages natural science students to write in her course INTD 105: Literature in the Laboratory.

An extract from “Dear Exterior, or the opposite of factory is museum”

An inverse. A bright white déjà vu:
a hand inside a head unraveling the public

memory. Step into the same freezing
corridor brimming with preservation

lines of object and meant-to-be-

seen.

The Lamron, Geneseo’s student newspaper, published this article on Winrock.

Jonathan Everitt interviewed Winrock for his blog in May 2013.

Signing Up For Mount TBR 2014

Last Saturday, 2013-11-02, I moaned about missing my 2013 Mount TBR goal. I read lots and lots of books, but not the specific books I said I’d read.

For 2014, I will be signing up again. As an exercise in self-discipline, this year I’m going to commit to a higher level of accomplishment: Mt. Vancouver (36 specific books) instead of Mount Blanc (24 specific books).

I will read the books on my 2013 list, plus at least another dozen.

When I’ve decided which books, I’ll update the list here:
The books are listed in order by publication date. I won’t necessarily read them in that order, though.
