Third Sentence Thursday – January 3, 2013

“At home, I lived in brightness.”
from People of the Book, by Geraldine Brooks

I’m near the end of the book, now. The chapters aren’t numbered, and they alternate between points of view of the present-day protagonist—a young woman who is an expert in conserving ancient manuscripts—and those of various people who have been involved in the history of a lavishly illustrated Hebrew manuscript through the centuries from its creation in 15th century Seville, through its history until its re-discovery in a museum vault in civil-war–torn Sarajevo in 1996. These are the “people of the book.”

Today’s snippet is the third sentence from the chapter describing the making of the illustrations by a talented artist, a North African, captured by a rival tribe and sold to a Moorish calligrapher in Seville. The calligrapher has been hired by the emir to create portraits of his wife, and assigns the slave to live with the emira. The girl, born free under the desert sun, now lives the (relatively) dark, cold life of a European slave.

“At home, I lived in brightness.” Such an expression of longing and loss!

What bits of your former life still have that kind of hold on you?

2013 reading goals

I have two interlocking reading goals for 2012.

  1. Read one book a week that has been gathering dust on my shelves. Some of these are old favorites that I’ve been wanting to re-read but haven’t gotten around to. Some of these are books, new to me, that I picked up on sale, or found at thrift shops, or borrowed from friends.
  2. Read books scheduled by my two book clubs.

My intention is to blog something about each of these books. It may be a review that will also appear on GoodReads or the TBR challenge blog. It may be an essay on an issue raised in a recently-read book. It may only be a simple “Third Sentence Thursday” quote. But I will write something.

I will also try to be better at tracking my want to read/am reading/finished status on my Read! page. May put it into a table format, so it will be easier to see whether the books are part of a challenge, assigned for a book club discussion, or just random stuff that caught my eye.

First day

First day of a new year spent doing laundry, watching “Best in Show,” and listening to neighbors spinning their car wheels on the ice under a gentle blanketing of snow. So much energy wasted by those spinning wheels!

Blog resurrection

cat blogging

cat, blogging

I’ve seriously neglected this blog. Gotta fix that!

To help get back in gear, I’ve decided to join a couple of blog challenges.

  1.  The 2013 ToBeRead (TBR) Pile Challenge
Roof Beam Reader sponsors this. The idea behind this challenge is that you read older books gathering dust on your shelves, books that you meant to read but have been sitting there for longer than a year. Sounds fun, and manageable: one book a month from my TBR pile, read and reviewed online. This will also help declutter the bedroom bookshelves.
  2. Third Sentence Thursday
What it says:  Take whatever you are currently reading and post the third sentence in your blog. Share your thoughts on the sentence. Started this two years ago, but let it lapse. Going back to it, now. Some posts will be from my TBR Challenge books. Others will be from work-related books, poetry, essays, blog articles. Third sentence, each time.
  3. Cricket Walker’s occasional photo-blogging challenges, at V7N.com’s photography forum or on Facebook.
  4. I’ve also found several sources of daily or weekly writing prompts:
  1. NaBloPoMo Challenge
  2. Mindful Writing Challenge aka Small Stones
  3. Writers Digest Creative Writing Prompts
  4. Corbett Harrison’s WritingFix prompts
  5. Visual Writing Prompts
  6. The Writer magazine
  7. Writing Prompts That Don’t Suck
  8. Figment.com Daily Themes
  9. Ink Provoking
  10. Your Daily Writing Prompt
  11. Photoprompts
  12. Toasted-Cheese.com calendar
  13. Creative Writing Prompts
  14. Plinky
  15. Sunday Scribbles

No excuses now. Just do it!

My cats are attending a Twitter party

Yes, you read it correctly. My cats—excuse me, make that Feline Overlords—are attending a virtual party on twitter.

It isn’t their first, either. They have been occasional visitors to the weekly #nipclub events, several online weddings (of other “anipals”) and several charity-fundraising “pawties.”

This one is the 3rd Annual SciFi Pawty (#scifipawty), and they wheedled me into making costumes for them. Seriously.

Midnight is going as an Imperial Stormtrooper:

Midnight, dressed for the scifipawty

Maxwell wanted to be a Wookie:

Max as Chewbacca

Cav? He decided that, if he couldn’t have a gun, he wanted a light saber. Meet ObiWanCavendish:

Cav as Obi Wan Kenobi

Impressive, isn’t he?
